Kabe-don (壁ドン)

Kabe-don is a romantic trope seen in various shoujo anime and manga. Kabe means “wall” and don is a Japanese onomatopoeia for the thud of hitting a wall. Usually, this is where a tough (sometimes tsundere) character backs another character against the wall, resulting the latter pounding the wall with their fist with one or both arms. It invokes a cool feeling, making the one being pinned against the wall go all doki-doki like this girl here--

Ryuuko needed something to clear her mind. She didn't have a very good day today and she needed something to take her mind off it. She didn't want to bother Mako while she was out on her date, she didn't want to bother anyone else either, so she decided to do something she hasn't done in a while climb up somewhere high and look at the sites. Old City had some of the best places to climb and the view was amazing.

Ryuuko set out for Old City and stopped at the ruins of an abandoned stadium. She started to climb the building and felt her frustrations go away, until she saw the person sitting against the broken off section on concrete. No, it couldn't be. Ryuuko stomped over and stood next to him.

"Tetsuo!? Tetsuo is that you!"

Tetsuo was looking in totally the other direction as she stomped on over to him, and looked up--and stared.

"E-.. eeh..?! Ryukun?!"

After all, one of the most memorable things about her was that kinda rough, tomboyish streak. He grinned and laughed a bit, scratching his head.

"Haha, wow, th'hell're you doin' up here?"

Ryuuko couldn't believe her eyes. It was Tetsuo. She thought she wouldn't see him again after he disappeared so quickly, but there he was in front of her with that grin and laugh she still remembered.

She grinned. "I could ask you the same thing. I needed to clear my head, I didn't have such a good day today. How about you? Why are you up here? And another question where the hell have you been!?"

It had been a few years since they'd been classmates and friends; Tetsuo had mostly grown a bit rougher around the edges, still a bit on the short and wiry side, his hair messier than ever, his clothes obviously rather beat up and well-worn. The wild, uncompromising grin was definitely familiar, though.

"Eeh..? Oh, uhh... well, yanno, didn't want nothin' more ta do withat school shit, so I went an' joined th'gang Hideo-kun was in, been there since. ...I mean, ain't really nobody left, now, but I keep asshole gangs off our turf."

Obviously he was avoiding something about why he left, but since the only evidence back then--what had it been, six years?--had been him suddenly becoming sullen, uncommunicative, and totally uninterested in school overnight, that was anyone's guess.

"Sorry y'ain't havin'a good day, tho. There somebody needs an asskickin'?"

A few years had passed since they hung out as both classmates and friends. Before she met Mako, Tetsuo was one of the first people to understand what it felt like to grow up in a bit rougher way. Then one day he left, it felt like he vanished with how fast it happened. Ryuuko had a plan to welcome him back if she ever saw him, one that included her fists, but that left the minute she saw him.

Ryuuko didn't think he would be back. Let alone in front of her with that familiar grin. She nodded. "If it wasn't for a promise I made, I wouldn't be in school either, but here I am." Sometimes she felt school wasn't for her, but she really didn't have the heart to tell Mako she would leave. It was easier to stay.

"Oh yeah I heard about that gang. Someone asked me if I was going to join, but I wasn't interested in it." So that rumor was true, maybe she shouldn't have beaten up that guy who told her. Well, he healed, that was good. Ryuuko had another question for him as to why he just picked up and left school one day, but she decided not to touch on it yet.

Ryuuko laughed as she shook her head. "Nah, not today. I mostly wanted to get away for awhile and not get into another fight." She grabbed a slice of pizza and plopped down next to him. "How about you? How's your day going?"

Tetsuo laughed and scratched his head, ruffling his hair up a bit, although it really couldn't get any more mussed up than it already was. He made no comment at all about her stealing a slice of his pizza--if anything slightly flustered at her settling down right next to him like that. Maybe he hadn't changed all that much, but while she was recognizable, Ryuuko had definitely grown up.

"Eeh..? Haha, well, goin' pretty good, I guess, runnin' int'you again, right?"

Ryuuko grinned at the way Tetsuo scratched his head and ruffled up his already messy hair. It looked like some things about him hadn't change either. His smile made him really attractive though. "It's good to know you're doing good." She laughed and nodded from his words. "Really? Didn't think I was someone others would be happy to run into."

He still had that ability to make her say whatever was on her mind too.

Tetsuo looked a bit shocked at that response.

"Eeh..?! Oi, 'course y'are, I mean we were always friends as kids, right? An' anyway, uh..."

He stalled out for a second, then laughed sheepishly again.

"..e...eheheh... well, yanno, yer lookin' pretty hot these days, too, so I guess a lotta guys wouldn't mind runnin' int'ya."

Ryuuko pretended to look at the piece of pizza in front of her when she saw Tetsuo's response. It wasn't like her to be so self conscious, but sometimes it still came out despite her attempts to squish that down. Tetsuo's words though does make her feel better. "Heh, yeah we were always together when we were kids and getting into trouble that was fun."

She looked over at him and nearly dropped her pizza at his next comment. It reminded her of how he would blurt things out when they were children. That was one thing about Tetsuo that hadn't changed.

"Um, well, thanks. You're not looking too bad yourself." She smirked and took a bite of her slice.

Tetsuo laughed and grinned sheepishly, scratching the back of his head as though that had to be some kind of joke. He'd been flirted with before, sure, but only as a gag, to get a reaction; after all, he was kind of short, not at all a stack of beefcake muscles, and usually had more of a Little Brother than Cool Tough Dude vibe. Still, he couldn't help reddening at the assertion. Even if he tried to act a lot more tough-guy and cavalier these days, his heart was pretty much on his sleeve as much as ever, at least to anyone who knew where to look.

"E-ehahaha, o-oi, c'mon, Ryukun, I ain't kiddin'..! I mean, when we were kids, I wouldn't'a said 'man Ryukun's gonna grow up ta be a real hot chick,' but like... shit, y'ain't just ain't bad... y'gotta have at least like a dozen guys, right?"

......he also kind of still had a way of putting his foot in his mouth, if you didn't really know him well. Really, he means it all to be flattering.

Ryuuko smiled when she saw that smile and that familiar gesture of scratching behind his head. It looked liked Tetsuo still kept some of those sweet mannerisms she remembered when they were kids. She shook her head as she took another bite of her slice. She really didn't grow up with a really curvy figure or a big chest or hips, but she figured she did pretty good.

"If you mean a dozen of guys that want to fight me everyday, then yeah. Guys who want to date me I wouldn't even know." Ryuuko grinned over at him. "I'm sure a guy as smooth as you have a line of girls wanting to talk to you too."

"E-.. eeh..?! Smooth? Haha, y'gotta be kiddin', Ryukun, y'ain't really talkin'bout me, areya? Sounds more like Hideo-kun, havin' tons'a chicks all over'im."

Tetsuo grinned sheepishly, laughing it off, although he was still a bit flustered at the suggestion of him being smooth.

"I really ain't th'type chicks go for, yanno?"

Ryuuko smirked as she nodded and finished up her slice. "I am! I've met a few guys over the years and they're not as sweet as you." She frowned a bit at his next statement before she smiled over at him. "I don't see why not. You're sweet, kind, and pretty cool to hang around. Shoot, I'd date you."

Ryuuko leaned over for another slice when her words clicked in her mind. She flushed and looked over at him sheepishly. "I mean I would if like you didn't have so many girls asking you!" She felt that wasn't a good enough save, but it was the best one she had.

"..ee-..!"

Tetsuo blinked and stared at her, reddening--already a bit flushed at her calling him sweet, but ten times more so at the assertion that she'd date him.

"..y-... ......y'would? ...I mean... ..........I ain't, uhh... I ain't got nobody doin' that..."

..................did that mean she was going to date him? ...Ryukun, the angry tomby girl, who'd somehow metamorphosed into a totally hot chick? Could things have really changed that much? This was like one of those butterfly things he didn't really pay attention to when he was in school, wasn't it...

Ryuuko silently cursed as she tried to figure out how she could fix what she started. Well, it wasn't that far off. She had a crush on Tetsuo when they were little. He was the only boy that didn't want to fight her and they ran things together so well that her admiration turned into a crush before she knew it. However, when he left she pushed those feelings to the back of her mind and didn't touch it up again. Yet she was able to spill her darkest secret in a matter of seconds.

Ryuuko stared at her sneaker before she looked over at him. "Um, you sure? I don't see why not."

Well, she wasn't one to run away from anything, she wasn't going to stop not. Ryuuko turned her red face to him as she nodded. "Yeah, um, I would. You, um, always saw me differently so I...yeah..."

She would face whatever happened, though she still couldn't believe she didn't realize what she said.

"E-...eheheheh, r-really..? I mean... y..yeah, I'm sure, ain't nobody done nothin' more'n tease me 'bout it... y....y'really wanna....? I mean, uhh... ...Idunno nothin'bout it, so uh... might not be no good at it or nothin'."

Still, despite being obviously about as flustered as he could get, he was rather obviously pleased at the prospect... if also rather nervous about it. The way he combed a hand through his hair was always a sign he was out of sorts somehow, either upset or just worried. Not that it made his mop of hair any neater.

...and, after all, could she still be pulling his leg?

".......you, uh.. y'really serious, Ryukun..? I mean... I ain't sayin' yer lyin', just... .....y...yanno, chick like you..."

His eyes wandered downward indicatively. She had a lot more going on than when they were kids, after all. How could other guys not notice that?

Ryuuko rubbed the back of his neck as she looked over at Tetsuo. She noticed that he continued that way of combing his fingers through his hair. Something that he did when they were kids and there was something he didn't understand. Ryuuko nodded as she got up and walked over to take a seat next to him. She was never one to beat around the bush too much.

"Yeah I am. I, like you, you know alot. When you left I...I really missed you, so to run into you was pretty great and I don't really want you to go again." Ryuuko felt a little mushy saying it, but she figured it would be a good time to let him know how she felt. Ryuuko turned to him and gave a small smile. "I'm serious I would Tetsuo."

Tetsuo blinked, blushing darkly at that straight-shooting answer, especially with her sitting so close to him. Although obviously still flustered, he tried to compose himself for the sake of his tough image ~~whether she bought into it at all or not~~.

"...e..eto...... w-..well... e-eheheh, I mean... if, uh.. if that's really how y'feel 'bout it... ....I mean. ...you, uh."

He hesitated there, then steeled himself, huffed quietly, and reached a hand over to rest over hers.

"......y'wanna go out, then?"

Ryuuko knew it was a risk to put her feelings out in the open in such a way. Then again she put her feelings out there and she wasn't one to take back her word. Besides, she did feel that way about Tetsuo, feelings she thought that she kept down came back up when they were together again. As cheesy as it sounded Tetsuo was back and she didn't want to let him go again.

Her heart beat a little faster as she waited for his answer. The way he stammered still continued to be cute. She grinned when he placed his hand over her own.

"Yeah," She turned her hand to link their fingers together. "Yeah, I do."

Tetsuo blinked down at their hands and grinned sheepishly, his free hand scratching his head.

"Eheheheh... s...s-so, uhh... what...... what'd y'wanna do? I mean, uh. Fer, like... a date, an' shit."

...he was still staring down at their hands, kind of awed just at actually holding hands so intimately. That was already way more than he was really expecting at all.

Ryuuko grinned at his reaction, though it didn't keep the red off her cheeks to feel the warmth of his hand. It was so big and warm, she didn't want to pull away, as cheesy as that sounded.

"Hmm, how about we catch a movie? Unless you're hungry than we can get something to eat."

It really didn't matter to Ryuuko as long as they were together. Man, she was starting to get cheesy, but she didn't care. She actually liked the giddiness going through her. It felt nice.
